About Science in the City
Science in the City was established in 2001 to provide school students from across Sydney to an opportunity to engage first-hand with a wide range of science activities to celebrate National Science Week.
The event has reached tens of thousands of students with hands-on workshops, shows, talks, tours and the Science in the City Expo provided by some of Australia’s best science research and education bodies.
In 2009 the Science in the City program will offer almost 200 separate science activities a day over 6 days. From August 4-6 the Science in the City High School Program will offer a range of activities suitable for students who are only beginning their science studies as well as those who are thinking of science as a career.
The next week on August 11, 12 and 13 the Science in the City Primary School Program offers activities for students in stage 2 and stage 3 of the primary syllabus. Teachers who book their classes into Science in the City all receive access to a special teacher’s resources page on this site with activities, worksheets, class plans and more designed to support and extend their visit to Science in the City once they return to the classroom.
Since 2006 Executive Partners the Australian Museum and the University of Sydney have extended the reach of the project to include communities in regional Sydney and rural New South Wales with Science in the Suburbs and Science in the Bush. Made possible through support from the Australian Government through the Science Connections Programme of the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research under the Science Connections Program these events take place in:
