Science in the Suburbs at Cumberland State Forest will be held on 12 June 2008.
Hosted by Forests NSW, Science in the Suburbs at Cumberland promises to be a great day for senior students and teachers to learn about all things scientific happening in their local area.
Morning Sessions 9:30am - 11:40am
Morning sessions begin at 9:30 with a short introductory talk and walk around Cumberland State Forest. Students then complete two workshops. In the workshop 'Biosecurity' students will discover how and why scienctists are working to detect and identify various organisms entering the country. In the second workshop 'Wildlife Surveying', students will practice various methods and techniques of fauna survey, commonly used by research scientists.
Afternoon Sessions 12:00pm - 2:30pm
Afternoon sessions begin at 12:00 with a short introductory talk and walk around Cumberland State Forest. Students then complete two workshops. One workshop, 'Fire and Water', allows students to discover first hand the affects of fire and water on native flora. In the second workshop, 'Carbon Storage and Global Warming' students will use various practical methods to calculate the carbon storage abilities of various materials and will also examine the applied science behind the impact of climate change on our native flora.
Please keep in mind when looking at the program that you can book your school into a morning or an afternoon session, but not both.
