Workshops

This range of workshops is designed to engage and inform! Students will get up close and hands-on with real science.

Due to the popularity of the program each group may only book into one workshop.

Making Rocks and Polymers and the Very Cold
For years 3-6

An interactive hands-on session in which you will make a crystal garden and see first hand the effect of very cold temperatures on a variety of materials. You will also have the opportunity to make everyday polymers.
Brought to you by UWS

Crime Scene Investigation
For years 3-6

You have seen it on television, now find out exactly what forensics investigators do at the crime scene and back at the lab. In this interactive workshop you will visit the crime scene house where you will act as a Crime Science Investigator and collect, record and analyse forensic materials.
Brought to you by UWS

Microscopic Mysteries and Mayhem
For years 3-6

Investigate bodies and bugs living on and around you and other microscopic mysteries.
Brought to you by UWS

Minibeasts
For years 3-6

What's in your backyard? This interactive workshop will use museum specimens and live animals to explore the wonderful world of minibeasts.
Brought to you by the Australian Museum

Exploring Mathematics
For years 3-6

Mathematics is not just about pens and paper, in this hands-on workshop you will do maths not just write about it.
Brought to you by UWS

Lego Mindstorms Robotics
For years 3-6

An interactive hands-on workshop that demonstrates how robots really work. Using the brand new NXT system, students complete a series of challenges that incorporate the use of environmental sensors and basic programming.
Brought to you by Fizzics Education

Australian Wildlife
For years 3-6

From Possums to Crocodiles! Care and action for biodiversity is encouraged through a fun, informative and hands-on presentation of live native fauna.
Brought to you by Australian Wildlife Displays

Create a Buzz
For years 3-6

A hands-on workshop where students investigate conductors and insulators, basic circuit theory, magnetism and electrical safety.
Brought to you by Fizzics Education

Dinosaurs and Fossils
For years 3-6

What can we learn about the world's past from fossils? How do we know what we know about Dinosaurs? Explore these questions and lots more in this fun and hands-on workshop presented by the Australian Museum.
Brought to you by the Australian Museum

Reptile Mania!
For years 3-6

Interact with a variety of native snakes and lizards.
Brought to you by UWS

Planetarium
For years 3-6

A highly interactive experience, The Starlab Planetarium is an inflatable dome that allows students to observe the night sky at any time of the day or night. Students will see the night sky as they have never seen it before while exploring constellations, planets and other astronomical phenomena.
Brought to you by Macquarie University

Shows and Talks

This is diverse program of spectacular and informative science shows designed to astound and amaze audiences with the wonders of science!

Great Moments in Science
For years 3-6

Dr Karl Kruszelnicki, Triple J science guru and the University of Sydney's Julius Sumner Miller fellow will explore the world of science from the wackiest experiments to the most original hypotheses. Enjoy the greatest moments in science in this fun-filled lecture on all things scientific.
Brought to you by the University of Sydney

Sound Effects
For years 3-6

Get into the groove and feel the vibrations in this comical exploration of the astounding world of sound including hearing, pitch and amplification.
Brought to you by Questacon

Solids, Liquids and Gases
For years 3-6

This interactive show features spectacular demonstrations with dry ice and liquid nitrogen, exploring changes of state. Students will learn about different states of materials as we discuss and demonstrate boiling and condensation, freezing and melting and the heat capacity of different solids.
Brought to you by CSIRO

Engineering Creativity & Mechatronics
For years 3-6

Modern engineering feats and design features will be shown and discussed. The role of robotics and how mechatronics is changing our world is discussed.
Brought to you by UWS

Water for Life
For years 3-6

An insight into efficient water harvesting and management.
Brought to you by UWS

The Magic of Chemistry
For years 3-6

Professor Peter Leverett will demonstrate the magic of chemistry, involving many examples of chemical reactions that we encounter in everyday life. The activity allows students to experience some of the fun of chemistry by watching things "magically" change colour, bubble and froth, produce smoke, freeze at -196 Celsius and even explode! Members of the audience are invited to take part in the famous Chemical Horse Race and also the really loud Big Bang Water finale.
